Excessive Sweating

'Excessive sweating' (hyperhidrosis) can a debilitating and embarrassing condition which can greatly reduce quality of life and impose significant limitations to what sufferers feel they can achieve in everyday situations. The most commonly affected areas are under the arms and on the palms and/or soles.

Patients have told me that they develop sweat patches under their arms in as little as five minutes after leaving for work in the morning - even in winter. The dilemma of what kind of clothes to wear is only half the problem. Patients with 'excessive sweating' on their palms often say that they feel reluctant to shake someone's hand or have any physical contact at all. One mum couldn't even lead her 3-year-old daughter safely over a busy street, as her wet palms made her daughter's hand slip away too easily. It's easy to see how disabling this condition can be, but the good news is it can be treated effectively.

Even if you don't suffer severe problems like those described above, it may still be worth coming along to chat about your options, since even patients with only mild 'excessive sweating' have reported how much their quality of life has improved after treatment.

For the palms and soles as well as the underarms, topical solutions and special home-use iontophoresis (electrical impulse) machines can help many patients. Injections with botulinum toxin ('Botox') is an extremely effective option for the armpits which lasts for around 6-12 months. Before performing this treatment we apply a special numbing cream to make the procedure painless. Feedback from our patients has been extremely positive.
